James Groves


James specialises in providing contentious and non-contentious legal advice across a broad range of regulatory and competition related matters, particularly in relation to the postal, energy and telecoms sectors. He has particular experience and interest in working with clients engaged in high-value competition disputes related to both stand-alone and follow-on damages actions. This encompasses representation before the Competition Appeal Tribunal, High Court and Court of Appeal, as well as the application of EU law.

Since joining the firm, James has developed his practice to include advising clients on public policy issues, regulatory compliance and investigations brought by national regulatory bodies such as Ofcom. He has also broadened his experience through working on behalf of regulatory bodies themselves.

James trained with a magic circle firm in both London and Brussels, subsequent to which he was an associate with an American boutique firm, specialising in competition litigation. Prior to a career in the law, he spent 3 years working as a consultant at a Big Four accountancy firm. This was followed by a further 3 years in public policy, heading up a research team within one the UK’s leading think tank organisations.  James graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford University with a BA and MSt. in Modern History. He holds a Graduate Diploma in Law from City, University of London and undertook the Legal Practice Course at the University of Law.
